About this class

Join metal clay artist extraordinaire, Pam East, for the ultimate video guide to making hinged boxes. Use silver clay to make straight or curved boxes that open to reveal a collage of steampunk gears and gemstones or a tiny secret garden!

Over 5 hours of video instruction.

In session one, Pam shows step-by-step box fabrication including: mixing clay brands for the right combination, correct brush control, cutting, creating and texturing box pieces, then box assembly and adding a bail.

In session two, you will see how to create the individual gears plus how to make a hinge and clasp that fit and work like a charm! If you’re not quite ready for hinges, you’ll enjoy Pam’s shadow box construction as an extra bonus, a stunning pendant that frames your gears or tiny parts collage.

In session three, Pam will complete the box showing you hinge assembly, adding gemstones, firing and finishing and even making a cotter pin that holds your pendant perfectly closed with a click.

But don’t stop there.
Pam also shows you exactly how to create a curved sided box. Learn the trick to creating a clay drying arch to make your curved pieces fit just right. See where to place your hinges when working on a curved pendant instead of square.

As a special BONUS video, follow along step-by-step as Pam reveals her favorite way to make Tiny Parts. Learn how to form these little elements for inside the pendants. You will love making a secret garden.

Other BONUS videos include:
Masking: creating both a textured pattern and smooth finish on one surface
Alternate Bail: A Beautiful Curve

“There are as many approaches to box construction as there are artists who make them.” says Pam East. “My version focuses in on intricate, delicate detail. Tiny gears with tiny gemstones; small, tight unobtrusive hinges with smooth action. The precise nature of the work means this is a challenging, multi-layered project.”
