Talking with Mr. Charles Lewton-Brain was a major treat!
After devouring his book, FoldForming, I was excited to talk one-on-one.
Here is what Alan Revere, master goldsmith and award-winning jewelry designer, has to say about Charles:
“He is one of the most knowledgeable, most celebrated and most accessible metalsmiths in North America. Above all, his most significant contribution has been to invent a way of working metal that never existed before: fold-forming.”
I find Mr. Lewton-Brain incredibly articulate and generous with sharing his knowledge and genius.
His words expose truth about the act of creating, with soulful worth, no matter what your medium.
Enjoy.

I have discovered that I love twisting and bending things. I just started using metal wires and love that feeling.
Oh my gosh Alison! I have been talking with my artist friends about music in design, about how a piece of art can have a rhythm, a tone, noise, dissonance, harmony….
And I have been talking to my musician friends (classically trained, and jazz) about how music has color, texture, form, how notes are made to produce a visual result. Why when the conductor says, “Rich and velvety”, we all know precisely what to do to achieve that specific texture. I am thrilled that you mentioned a musical quality in his work. Musicians understand the correlation and are aware of it, much more than most artists. But I think it is really something worth meditating about.

Hi Dawn,

I’m a little behind on listening to my podcasts, but I am so glad you interviewed Charles. Having had Charles as an instructor over the last 3 years, I’m glad that the many listeners of Craftcast are getting the chance to experience a bit of his knowledge. His work is amazing and he is always willing to share his knowledge.
