Today I talk with David Huang, an artist and metalsmith who creates luminous metal vessels. I find myself wishing I could crawl inside anyone of them for a meditative time out! Awe inspiring!
Also today, I celebrate the beginning of year number 5 of CRAFTCAST. My first show was March 14th, 2006, and I interviewed Cathie Filian from Creative Juice. She was just getting ready to launch her show and 4 years later we are both still crafting away.
A big, big hug to everyone who has read my blog, listened to the show, and shared their comments. (I could get really mushy here…)
I look forward to lots more internet adventures together!

Today I talk with Hadar Jacobson, jeweler, inventor, teacher and author!
Ms. Jacobson is well known and highly regarded in the metal clay community for her generosity with her teaching and her own line of metal clay products. With Hadar’s clay you have the choice to work in copper, bronze, steel, and stainless steel, and her instructional books are well designed with easy to follow instructions.
I love the combination of all the metals. I’m inspired to try something new!

Used some gold from my gold stash to make some new birthday earrings. The pearls have an open back bezel and making the whole earring very light. Even left them on sleeping…
Working with gold is such a high.
I alloyed the gold and made my own wire, fused a circle, and flattened the edges for a slightly random shape, sort of a 50’s inspired circle. I decided to hang a pearls and made the bezels, cut open the backs and add loops and jump rings.
I forgot what it is like to work this small. It was nice to have my whole world concentrated beneath a magnifying visor.
PS. thanks to Michael David Sturlin’s class recording, I was able to use the jeweler’s saw with much more ease and successful results!

Another really cool LIVE class here at the CRAFTCAST studio:
“How to Make Beach Pebbles from Polymer Clay”
with Cynthia Tinapple
Wednesday December 2, 2009 8pm EST

above: Some of Cynthia’s poIymer pebbles used in a fab necklace
I’ve been dying to learn how to make these little darlings, so I was thrilled when Ms. Tinapple, from Polymer Clay Daily agreed to give a LIVE class, here through the CRAFTCAST studio.
I’m always collecting great pebbles and stones to hopefully one day add into jewelry designs.Drilling holes in these bits and pieces is always a challenge. (sometimes it works and sometimes…well..)
So… polymer clay replicas sounds like the ticket!
Ms. Tinapple has been working on her own style and formula for years and is going to share it with all of us!!!
I’ve never really been interested to play with polymer clay, but this has me ready to pull out my polymer supplies stashed away somewhere in the studio with new enthusiasm!

I’m very excited to announce a new online LIVE class here at the CRAFTCAST studio:
“Zen and the art of the Jeweler’s Saw” with Michael David Sturlin
Wednesday December 9, 2009 8pm EST

above: Michael’s beautiful results achieved with the jeweler’s saw
I know many of us cringe at the idea of using the dreaded jeweler’s saw!
Michael David Sturlin, an award winning goldsmith, studio jewelry artist, and educator, is here to lead the way for all of us to discover one of the most versatile and functional tools on the goldsmith’s bench. Mr. Sturlin will show us how this tool is one of the most precise and skillful means of creating an endless variety of jewelry designs directly in metal.
“Sawing and piercing can be one of the most aesthetically pleasing and satisfying activities at the bench, says Michael. Because it requires so little this is truly an application of minimalism in the studio.“
I’m excited!

The Faux Bone class this past Monday night with Mr. Dancik was sooooo wonderful! Lot’s of how-to plus new never info on how to add color to Faux Bone!
Please email pictures of what you make so I can share them with everyone.
This Monday, September 21st, at 8:00PM EST, Robert will once again lead us through another great class called: Forming Meaningful and Lasting Connections
It was in this class last time that I finally learned to rivet, which I love and use all the time in my jewelry construction.

above: Robert Dancik at work
Robert covers a variety of ways to cold connect one thing to another, no matter what the medium. He shows examples of how to connect polymer clay, metal clay, silver, cement, plastic, paper mache and whatever you can think of, as well as inspiring and challenging us as to what are we ’saying’ with our piece by the connections we use. Lots of information to think about…
If you haven’t tried a LIVE online class yet, give it a try. We have a great time. Here are some comments from Monday’s class:
I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you how much I enjoyed the webinar last night! I learned several things new, had a few good laughs, and best of all, it got my creative juices flowing with excitement! J You were a wonderful hostess and Robert was a delight to listen to. I look forward to the next one and thank you again! ~S.
Loved it!!!! where can i download the handout for the class?? Thanks again for making this possible, love taking a class without
leaving home!. ~F.
I was in the webinar last night and really learned a lot! Have been experimenting with faux bone all morning! Did you say Robert is doing a webinar on rivets? I would love to take it. Please let me know if it is coming up soon. Thanks, S.

I’m so excited to finally be offering this LIVE on line class with Robert.
If you don’t know about Faux Bone, it’s time to learn, and if you want to get more info about it from the guru himself, then this is the class for you.
Mr. D will be covering all the how-to’s, plus tons of inspiring examples of what you can do with the material. (it is some kind of a poly substance that looks like old ivory to me)
Robert also just told me that in this class he will also be giving brand new information on how to now add color to the material. Woo Hoo! Sign me up.
Remember, since it is a LIVE class, there will be lots of time to ask questions, so plug in a mic if you want to talk, or just type away in the chat box. Either way, you’ll be heard!
Even more fun is in store for 3 lucky participants who will win one of the following GIVEAWAYS!
1. Robert’s new book: Amulets and Talismans
2. Robert’s new DVD: Faux Bone Jewelry Tools and Techniques with Robert Dancik
3. A Faux Bone Kit that includes:
• 1 sheet each of 1/16″, 1/8″, 1/4″ 1/2″ Faux Bone
• 1 Faux Bone forming tool
• 1 dozen Faux Bone blades

I’ve been fascinated with tube settings for sometime now,
so I was very excited to have my dear friend Liz give me a one-on-one demo!
You can check out Tim McCreight’s book, The Complete Metalsmith, or the quickie graphic tutorial in the 2010 Rio Grande Gem and Findings Catalog (pg. 678) for some how-to information.
This is a slab of stone I cut and polished, and then drilled a hole for a 4mm faceted CZ that I set in sterling silver heavy tubing.
(size of stone is 1″ x 2″ approx.)
I love setting sparkly things into other sparkly things.
Next, a bezel…
