”Imagination is the beginning of creation.
You imagine what you desire,
you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.”
~George Bernard Shaw
I love that quote.
That’s the theme here at the CRAFTCAST studio and talking with my guest Sheri Gaynor got that party started!
Here is some bio information on Ms. Gaynor:
Artist, author, Feisty Female™ and facilitator of women’s dreams, Sheri Gaynor spent the first half of her life attempting-without much success-to walk the straight and narrow cultural path. As someone with an insatiable curiosity, she spent her early years trying on a lot of hats, trying desperately to make them fit-photojournalist, rubber stamp artist, T-shirt designer and psychotherapist, to name a few-attempting to figure out what she wanted to “BE” when she grew up. The journey wasn’t always an easy one and much was learned through the school of hard knocks; a formidable education. Little did she know that by walking that wide, crooked and creative road, she would find the trail to her authentic self and living the life of her dreams.
Don’t miss dropping in on this conversation.
We laughed, we shared and laughed some more!

Lots of you have taken a LIVE online class with me, and I know from hearing from you how much you enjoyed it!
For those of you who are wondering how this all works, here’s the scoop, broken down into 3 easy steps:
1. Sign up for class.
The next class available is:
Robert Dancik’s Faux Bone: An Exploration
This is a 2 part class, July 1st and July 8th at 8pm EDT all about how to work with Faux Bone.
To sign up you click this link which brings you to the page with all the class info, plus a familiar charge card link at the bottom of the page to pay online.
2. Register.
A few days before the start of class, you will get an email asking you to register. Registering gives me the information I need to send you email reminders about the class right up to an hour before.
(I don’t know about you, but I need timers and reminders for everything!)
3. Click the link to Join Class
That’s it. Click the link you received in the email a few minutes before the start of class, (showing up early is good too) and your computer will become your virtual classroom. Turn up your speakers or pop on your headset and listen. Enjoy watching the slide show of images on your computer screen showing all the how, what and where! (see example below of what you will see)
There is always a question and answer period.
So if there is something you just don’t get, or a particular question you have that wasn’t covered, you can either type it into the question box on your screen, or if you have a microphone, ask away.
(I know from my own workshop attending, how important that one little question can be!)
So that’s it.
How to take a live online class in 3 really easy steps.
And then, the best part… a great time learning with great teachers!
Oh, not to forget, you get an email the following week with a link to the recording of the class. That way you can listen and watch again and again.
I love technology!!!
I’m learning all about marketing. (not the food type)
So for the next class, Faux Bone: An Exploration,
you also get a BONUS.
Yahoo!
You get to pick your choice of a past class recording, a $24.95 value!
All recordings are approximately 90 minutes in length.
Choose from the following recordings:
Transfer That with Seth Savarick,
Creative Sparks with Dayle Doroshow,
101 Silver Metal Clay with Sherri Haab,
Creating Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Robert Dancik
Just tell me what recording you want when you sign up and pay for class.
What are you waiting for???

Talking with Mr. Charles Lewton-Brain was a major treat!
After devouring his book, FoldForming, I was excited to talk one-on-one.
Here is what Alan Revere, master goldsmith and award-winning jewelry designer, has to say about Charles:
“He is one of the most knowledgeable, most celebrated and most accessible metalsmiths in North America. Above all, his most significant contribution has been to invent a way of working metal that never existed before: fold-forming.”
I find Mr. Lewton-Brain incredibly articulate and generous with sharing his knowledge and genius.
His words expose truth about the act of creating, with soulful worth, no matter what your medium.
Enjoy.

Today I talk with Bronwen Heilman.
I’m in love with Bronwen’s recycled art and her approach to creating, using what she discovers hunting around at thrift shops or her local bar.
“My work explores the boundaries that I encounter in my daily life and the force it takes to go beyond these boundaries. I push myself and my work constantly through the walls that define a particular moment in time. I am always fighting my way out of this box, only to find another box just beyond. This process of molding and defining, then remolding and redefining my art helps me to find and define my own voice.”
Not to leave out, she also plays bass in her own band, GhostCow Band. Get a listen here

above: “I picked up a bucket of old rusty concrete nails from Habitat for Humanities. I am forging them out and then flameworking glass on to them. ”

above: “We receive the bottles, from a bar down the street. We wash off the labels, break up the glass and then cast the glass in a slab. After the slab cools, we cut it up into cubes, and then hand grind a roundel shape out of them. At this point more grinding is done until the final shape is acquired, and then a final polish in the tumbler.”

It’s all about alignment.
That’s my focus these days.
I think it is true that the more we “feel” in alignment,
the happier we are.
And then, we are happier because
we are aligned with what we were meant to be doing.
Easy, right?
Here is the dictionary definition of alignment that I like:
an arrangement of groups or forces in relation to one another
Leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
When I was working as an art director on photo shoots, unknowing visitors would ask me what an art director actually did.
Considering that much of my time was spent chatting with the crew, and enjoying the catered table of goodies, I could see the reason for their confusion.
My best answer was always:
“Go to a photo shoot without an art director,
and see what happens.”
It was all about keeping the groups alignment.
Keeping it all on track.
Reflecting on this past Monday nights online class with Tim McCreight, alignment is what came up for me.
I had an “Ah Ha” moment when Tim talked about how it wasn’t the designated name of the tool that mattered but what the tool could accomplish, the “essence” of the tool sort of speak, the alignment of that tool with the metal.
I’m looking at all my tools differently now.
How do they want to align with their purpose,
or like the dictionary definition:
an arrangement of groups or forces in relation to one another
hmmmmmmm

Today I talk with Timothy Adam!
I came across Tim’s blog and loved his enthusiasm for both making his jewelry and sharing his social marketing skills.
“I am a self taught metal artist, and a certified Mig welder. I started designing modern metal furniture in 2004. I built my first piece in Baltimore with my sister-in-law who is a furniture designer. I found my passion in metal and kept on designing and building. I struggled for 4 years to make a name in local galleries in the Grand Rapids Michigan area. A friend of mine introduced me to Etsy in February of 2007, and it changed my business. I started creating a jewelry line and have not turned back. In November of 2007 I had to quit my full time job cause my passion was becoming a dream come true! I am now selling all over the world through my Etsy shop. I also have wholesale accounts around the country with galleries, museums and salons.”

Mr. Adam has a wealth of knowledge that he is eager to share. Take advantage of his generosity!
Also, I have some “craft comfort” books to share with you.

An eye for design.
What does that mean exactly, and how do we get one?
This is one of my favorite subjects.
I find it a fascinating self-discovery process.
How do we nurture our ability to do “good design”, or create a “form that flows and satisfies?”
I love when I recognize an artist’s work by “knowing their style.”
The design process is such an interesting discussion…
Live Online,
Monday night, May 11th, at 8PM EST,
Tim McCreight will share with us his process.
I’m there.
